A “BAT” System is a Best Available Technology state-of-the-art septic system that is required for properties that are considered “critical areas”, meaning within 1,000 feet of the water. BAT typically replaces or works in combination with the conventional septic tank. The units’ biological processes are used to promote the release of nitrogen as a harmless gas to the atmosphere. Another term used interchangeably with BAT is “ATUs” which stands for Advanced Pretreatment Units and may include electrical and mechanical components such as pumps, blowers, floats, alarms, diffusers, and electronic control panels.
BAT systems will increase your energy usage on your electricity bill by $25.00 – $250.00 annually.
There is a BRF (Bay Restoration Fund Grant) Grant available through the county in which you live to help some homeowners cover the cost of the tank should the county require the homeowner to install a BAT System. Cullison is more than happy to help homeowners understand and apply for the grant. Please understand grant funding, if awarded, does not cover the cost of drain fields.
There are several different BAT systems, but here at Cullison we highly recommend the Norweco Singulair TNT System. We specialize in the Norweco system with installation, maintenance and repair of these specific systems. We recommend this tank due to the components used in the system that could need to be replaced or repaired are very minimal and not as expensive as others to repair.
The manufacturer suggests they be serviced approximately every 6 months, to which the state does keep a record if the homeowner is keeping up with the maintenance as they should.

Here at Cullison we offer 1 and 2 year contracts to perform the maintenance and make sure that your BAT system operates as it should and address any issues that may arise. If a client decides to use Cullison for the maintenance on their BAT, we input into the state database called the BATMAN run by MDE, (Maryland Department of Environmental) after each maintenance or repair visit we perform on the system.
Pumping out of the BAT is recommended at least every 3-5 years depending on the amount of people in the home and water usage. Not pumping the system as you should for maintenance purposes could be detrimental to the drain fields and cause the system to not work as designed and ultimately fail.
